Mazda was founded in 1920 as the tool manufacturer Toyo Cork Kogyo Company. Through out World War II the company produced rifles for the Japanese military, but by 1931 tool and weapon production ceased to exist and the company was focusing on vehicles. While the company's name would not officially be under the Mazda moniker until 1984 every car produced by the company was named Mazda. The uniqueness of the Mazda brand results from the development and use of a rotary engine instead of a traditional piston engine. While Mazda manufactured both styles, the rotary engine option helped gain publicity. Though today Mazda vehicles mostly feature the more fuel efficient style piston engines, their rotary engine still exists in its sport coupe models. In 1960 Mazda was in financial turmoil, and was saved by investment from the Ford Motor Company. This investment would eventually lead to Ford acquiring a controlling stake in the company. The partnership would be beneficial for both companies as coupled distribution helped increase Mazda sales, and design of the Ford Explorer originated from a Mazda design. During the financial crisis in 2008 Ford was forced to sell some of its stock in the company, thus losing controlling interest. However, the companies still maintain a close business relationship, and Mazda was able to become a large competitor in the United States' auto market due to their very inexpensive to insure vehicles.
