The origin of the word Jeep is still up to debate, and this is no clear frontrunner. However, there is no mystery behind the original manufacturer, the American Bantam Car Company. In 1940 the US Military asked American automakers to submit a design and prototype for a 4 wheel drive reconnaissance car. While the ABCC had the best design for the vehicle, bankruptcy prohibited them from being the main manufacturers. For this task the government gave the rights to the Willys-Overland corporation, who in turn could not meet the production numbers (a total of 640,000 vehicles for World War II) requested and therefore allowed Ford to help produce the units required. The military success of the vehicle led to its release to the American public in 1945. The company was purchased by Kaiser Motors in 1953, and then again by the American Motors Corporation (AMC) in 1970. Suffering from low profitability, AMC hoped the Jeep brand's international and government markets would help boost sales. Unfortunately the brand did not sell as well as was needed, and the company was purchased by the Chrysler Corporation in 1987. Chrysler was a publicly traded company until 1998 when Chrysler and all its subsidiary companies were purchased by Daimler-Benz AG. From 1998 to 2007 Chrysler was known as DaimlerChrysler Motors Company, until 2007 when the American Chrysler group was purchased by the private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management. It is still currently owned by the firm; however the Italian automaker Fiat currently owns 20% of Chrysler LLC, and depending on how sales perform, is expected to purchase the additional 80% is requires for complete ownership. The Jeep brand still is a successful seller and has released 3 new models in the past 5 years. It holds its niche well as a smaller sized all-terrain vehicle.
