Westfield was originally founded under the moniker "Ohio Farmers' Insurance Company" in 1848 after the Ohio legislature passed a bill allowing the formation of a fire insurance company. Years later the company began offering auto insurance to Ohio farmers and residents. Since rural populations are a lower risk than those in urban areas, the company enjoyed much success after its founding. The official name change to Westfield occurred in 1971 when the company had expanded business to life and home owner's insurance and need one name to unite all of the subsidiary Ohio Farmers' branches. They also believed that changing the name from Ohio Farmers gave them a more global brand that more consumers would respond positively too. In the early nineties Westfield acquired Economy insurance as well as Beacon Insurance to expand its territory to 7 new states. The company has grown to serve almost every state in the union, in addition, Westfield employs over 2,500 people and processes over $1.5 billion dollars in gross premiums per year.
