The current Travelers Insurance Company has its origins from two very successful insurance companies from the 1800's. The first was the Saint Paul Fire and Marine Insurance Company that was founded by early settlers in Minnesota concerned with property damage in the newly established region. After braving large disasters like the Chicago fire and San Francisco earthquake, St. Paul remained a strong company, and after world war one began selling insurance overseas. By 1998, the company had acquired the Fidelity and Guaranty becoming the 8th largest property and causality insurer in the world. The other half of the current corporation is the Travelers Insurance Company founded in 1864 whose endowed purpose was to protect people from harm that might befall them whilst riding in a train or on a steamboat. The company itself went through much buying out and restructuring but the essential information for a consumer is that Travelers purchased the causality arm of Aetna Insurance, and is no longer a subsidiary of the Citigroup. In 2004 the two companies merged to become the Travelers Companies Incorporated. The company currently employs over 30,000 people worldwide, and processes over $2 billion dollars in gross premiums per year.
