The original founding of The Hartford Insurance Company was in response to local merchants who untied to protect their businesses from fire, thus the Hartford Fire Insurance company was born. After braving major catastrophes through out history (such as the Chicago Fire, the 1835 New York Financial District fire, and the 1906 California earthquake and fire), the Hartford remained resolute and in 1913 began insuring automobiles. The Hartford provided claims to many major figures in history including Abraham Lincoln, Babe Ruth, Robert E. Lee, and Dwight D. Eisenhower to name a few. In 1970 the ITT Corporation took over The Hartford in a record $1.4 billion dollar deal, which is still the largest to date in American history. By 1995 the Hartford was once again an independent Company. Today it holds a special contract with the AARP, offering low cost insurance to seniors, in addition to being a major partner with the NCAA. The company currently employs over 28,000 people and processes over $2.5 billion dollars in gross premiums per year.
