Nationwide insurance began in 1926 as the Farm Bureau Mutual Automobile Insurance Company, and only provided car insurance to Ohio farmers. The new insurer enjoyed much popularity and in turn opened another branch of the company; fire insurance. Farm Bureau had immense luck in its early years because the people that it provided coverage for turned out to be a very low risk group, and were involved in very few accidents. This allowed them the room to expand their services as well as which states they could provide insurance in. 25 years after its initial founding, the company had expanded their coverage area to 20 states including those on the west coast and the name was then changed to Nationwide to better reflect the company's ideals. The company is one of the largest insurers in the United States and employs over 36,000 people. In addition Nationwide processes over $2 billion dollars in gross premiums per year.
