MetLife began insuring in 1863 under the moniker National Union Life and Limb Insurance Company, and focused on protecting Civil War veterans against wartime wounds that prevented them from working. After braving five difficult years of insuring those wounded, MetLife decided to expand business to all types of people looking for insurance. This business plan lead to great success and in 1870 MetLife had written over $13 million dollars in insurance premiums, which by today's standards is well over $200 million dollars. To increase efficiently, MetLife imported established English insurance agents who enjoyed much success in their own country, to train their own agents and this lead to another surge in productivity for the company. MetLife had established itself as a New York landmark and began to expand to its current size. The company now employs over 53,000 people and processes over 4 billion dollars in gross premiums per year.
