Guide One insurance began as the Preferred Risk Mutual Company serving states in the Midwest. Being a part of an incredibly competitive market, the company realized that its moniker was not helping them bring in new business. In 1998, the Preferred Risk Mutual Company changed its name to Guide One in order to promote a better brand image, and to re-launch itself as a major insurer. Initially the company insured churches, but expanded its business to the entire church-going population. The theory behind insuring those God-fearing folk was that non-drinkers who lived a pure lifestyle were less at risk when driving because of their avoidance of risky and dangerous behavior. Guide One owns this niche market, and has use its success to promote better living; it is the largest benefactor of MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving). In addition Guide One processes over 250 million dollars in gross premiums per year.
