Farmers Insurance Company was founded in Los Angeles, California in 1928 to provide ranchers and farmers with low cost auto insurance because they were statistically better drivers than those in urban areas, and the founders both grew up on farms. The statistics paid off and within 10 years Farmers had expanded their business to insure trucks and homes against fire. Its affordable policies and multiple locations across the United States accelerated the company's growth to eventually become one of the most lucrative and largest insurers. In 1998 Farmers became one of the larger subsidiaries of Zurich Financial Services International. In 2008 Farmers acquired 21st Century insurance from competitor AIG, making it the 3rd largest insurance company in the United States. The company offers auto, home, and life insurance and provides discounts to customers who purchase multiple types of policies. Be sure to inquire about these discounts when discussing a new policy with an agent. As far as stability is concerned, Farmers Insurance Company employs over 22,000 people nationwide and in addition processes over 250 million dollars in gross premiums per year.
