Commerce was founded in 1972 and specialized itself in the market by being the only insurance company to offer its services to residents in Massachusetts only. The company did not grow very large given the fixed population of Massachusetts, however it did gain much capital because the people who held policies with Commerce were in a low-risk group. Eventually the company had acquired enough capital to grow the business larger. In 1995 Commerce acquired the Pioneer Insurance Company in California, and began its expansion to the states it currently serves today. It gained much notoriety after the acquisition as the company profits increased year over year for a decade. In 2008 MAPFRE of Spain (one of the largest non-life insurance companies in the world) acquired Commerce, but allows it to function independently. Its reliable brand name was then expanded throughout the world, functioning as the third largest subsidiary of MAPFRE. Now Commerce serves the global network in 34 countries around the world. In addition 1.6 billion dollars of gross premiums per year are written by Commerce.
