The origins of the USAA resulted from a group of army officers that were all refused automobile insurance because companies considered them a high risk group. Realizing that many other military personnel faced the same problem, the group decided to expand service to all enlisted and retired men as well as their families. USAA has had tremendous success since its inception. This is due in large part to the fact that those who serve and served our country were not reckless behind the wheel, but rather reflected their training and discipline resulting in safer, more effective drivers. The company also uses direct marketing, not relying on agents but their own employees to contact military men and families and offer policies. With over 21,000 employees the company offers incredible rates, customer service, and discounts. However, a large downside for the population is that policies are still limited only to those in the military. The USAA processes over $2 billion dollars in gross premiums per year.
