Shelter Insurance was formed in 1946 as a subsidiary company of the Missouri Farmers' Association, extracting the name from the famous company slogan "Missouri Farmers' Association is your shield of Shelter." In 1981 the company officially changed its name to Shelter. Originally focusing on homeowners insurance, the company's reputation and legendary customer service helped grow the company and allow it to offer other types of insurance. Following the original auto insurance guidelines set up when the company was a subsidiary of Missouri Farmers, Shelter gained a large piece of the market share. With the auto insurance arm of the company doing well, Shelter decided to turn its efforts global instead of national with its launching of international coverage for existing customers' foreign property. This move paid off as Shelter was catapulted to the forefront of the insurance industry a few years after. It still remains strong today employing more than 2000 people worldwide, in addition to processing over $1.5 billion dollars in gross premiums per year.
