Selective Insurance Company had its humble start when general store owner Daniel L. B. Smith loaned a horse and carriage to an insurance salesman. The horse was lost and the carriage destroyed, and feeling indebted to Smith, the insurance agent gave him policy declarations for nearby farms as collateral. The DLB Insurance agency was founded that day in 1926. With new investors, the company changed its name to the Selected Risks Insurance Company and began a long history of success. Focusing on cutting edge technology and stringent underwriting the company prospered for many years. Selected changed its moniker to Selective in 1986 and after acquiring Managed Care Systems, Inc., Alta Services, Consumer Health Network (CHN), and Modern Employers, Inc. Selective became one of the largest insurance providers in the United States. In addition Selective has well over 2,000 employees and processes over 750 million dollars in gross premiums per year.
